Philipp Manes was sent to Terezin with his wife in July 1942, where they stayed for just over two years. During that time, he filled nine notebooks with almost 1,000 pages of factual accounts of his life in the camp.

He was committed to his fellow inmates, organising lectures, readings, poetry competitions and concerts.On 28 October 1944, he and his wife were put on the last train from Terezin to the gas chambers of Auschwitz.

The notebooks were looked after by a friend, who sent them to his youngest daughter who had come to Britain as a refugee before the war.
